Hot Skin Pass Mill & Tension Leveler Line for Ultra High-Strength Steel
In order to reduce CO2 generated from internal combustion engines, various efforts have been made to reduce the weight of vehicles over the last few decades. High strength steel materials are indispensable for the reduction of vehicles weight.
It is for this reason, the materials used for the frames and chassis are being made of Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS) and/or Ultra High Strength Steel (UHSS) possessing properties of not only high yield strength, but also better mechanical characteristics.
There exist strong requirements for materials to be fed to the automobile production lines to have precise dimensional accuracy, favorable physical shape and improved surface quality.
On the other hand, in the production line of UHSS material, higher rate rapid cooling with water on the run-out table is inevitable, which becomes one of the elements of lower flatness performance than conventional strips.
To produce UHSS material to the required quality, JP Steel Plantech Co. designed, manufactured and delivered a Hot Skin Pass Mill Line with Tension Leveler adopting various techniques and innovations suitable for UHSS materials. This paper introduces details of such techniques and innovations.

Development of Tension Leveler for Advanced High-Strength Steel
The production of advanced high-strength steel (AHSS) requires rapid cooling, which results in undesirable flatness and/or excessive residual stress of products. Those defects cause adverse effects to automobile production processes. Therefore, high-performance levelers are required for eliminating those defects. JP Steel Plantech Co. has developed a new tension leveler to meet market demands. This tension leveler has been operating since October 2014 with excellent performance to produce high-grade AHSS as expected with the customer’s satisfaction. This paper discusses the new tension leveler.

New Rolling Method of Reversing Cold Rolling
A reversing cold rolling mill has been suffering from such drawbacks as unrolled portions necessarily produced in head and tail ends reduce yield, and time consuming works including removing of coils, threading of the strip and holding of the strip with the tension reel, which result in decreasing productivity.
There has been developed a new rolling method and facility (Zoom-Mill™, Zero-Oriented Off-gauge Minimization) that allows a leader strip and a product coil are connected using a spot welding machine and are finished through even-number passes in a reversing cold rolling mill. It is expected to reduce unrolled portions (improvement of yield) as well as improvement of productivity.
The first Zoom-Mill™ was put into practical use and commercial operation started in March 2010. This mill is working very well as intended initially, achieving approximately 1% improvement of product yield of the products immediately after commencement of operation.
Productivity of the mill was also sharply increased along quick learning curve.No. 2015-03

The most advanced power saving technology in EAF Introduction to ECOARC™
JP Steel Plantech Co. has developed “ECOARC™”, a high efficiency EAF having the most advanced energy recovery and environmentally conscious technology in the Mini-Mill industry. ECOARC™ uses high temperature exhaust gas for preheating scrap charged into “shaft type” pre-heating chamber attached directly to the furnace shell. In addition, the gas is used to treat unwanted chemicals from the waste gas in a combustion chamber with very little use of extra fuel. Only ECOARC™ has these features because of its high level air tightness to prevent air infiltration into the scrap preheating shaft and the furnace.
Six ECOARC™ have already been put into commercial operation in Japan, South Korea and Thailand which have achieved approx. 30 % reduction of energy. In this paper, the method of improving energy efficiency by the utilization of waste heat is described and ECOARC™ under commercial operation are introduced.No. 2015-02

Advanced technology and application of large-scale CDQ
JP Steel Plantech Co. constructed 200 t/h and 185t/h large-scale CDQs, through technological improvements and scaling up of the CDQ facility, which was introduced from the former Soviet Union in 1972. Up to now, these CDQs have kept up a yearly operating ratio of 95% even after operation for 25 years, and 18 years respectively. In order to achieve these high operating ratios, I introduce the facilities technology which makes these factors realizable and which need to be taken into consideration.

THE NEW PROGRESS ON ECOARC™ IN THAILAND
To reduce energy consumption in the steel industry in Thailand, several model projects supported by the governments of Thailand and Japan were implemented. As one of them, an ECOARC™ was installed in UMC Metals Ltd. and started up in November 2012. The ECOARC™ is a high efficiency electric arc furnace with a scrap preheating system developed and designed by JP Steel Plantech Co. It was a brown-field project which replaces the existing conventional EAF with the ECOARC™, maximizing reuse of the existing facilities except key components of the ECOARC™, in order to minimize initial investment. After the start-up, all the targets of this project were achieved only within 2 months after the start-up in spite of the first and brown-field ECOARC™ in Thailand.
